I had my 20 week ultrasound, and it’s a……..

healthy baby!

I want to make sure to celebrate and appreciate this fact because I know not everyone is so lucky. The amniotic fluid levels, placenta, cervix, heart, kidneys, abdomen, head, extremities, etc. all looked good. The predicted weight was 11 oz. However, it does appear that the baby is measuring five or six days small, which could mean a variety of things. It could be that the due date was off by a few days. It could be that there was a technical problem with the ultrasound machine or technician because even a few millimeters could make a difference at this stage. It could be that the baby is just going to be on the small side. (My first was 6 pounds, 19.5 inches at 38 weeks, which is about average if you adjust for being 2 weeks early.) Those are the non-worrisome options. However, it could also mean that there is a problem with the baby, the placenta, or the connection between them that is inhibiting the baby’s ability to receive or process nutrients. My doctor was not especially concerned because the baby appears to be proportionally small, meaning that it is not just the abdomen or just the femur length that is small. I will probably have another ultrasound in a couple of months to check and make sure the baby continues to grow. When he told me that the baby was small, I immediately started thinking about intrauterine growth restriction and small for gestational age babies. I may or may not have cried a little, but we’ll chalk that up to hormones. I have not been asked to do anything differently with my diet, exercise, or prenatal apointments, and I am trying not to worry; most of the time I succeed 🙂 My next appointment is January 5th.

We did find out the baby’s gender. I included the ultrasound picture of his/her parts. Can you tell? I’ll let you know for sure next week!

During the day, I don’t notice much movement because I am busy and not thinking about it. Plus baby is still so small. However, I like to feel it and know baby is alive and kicking, so I’ve started spending about 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night just laying in bed feeling my baby move. In my opinion, baby movement is one of the best things about pregnancy! I continue to feel well with no uncomfortable symptoms.

We will be celebrating our first Christmas of the season with my family this coming Sunday, and I still have a fair amount of shopping and all of the wrapping to do. I’m not quite sure when this is going to get done, but I know it will. I also have some projects/activities/outings that I would like to do with my son in the next couple of weeks. It’s definitely a busy time of year!

Exercise: class at the gym, 30 minutes on elliptical, 30 minute jog

Weight: 128 pounds (up two for the week, up 13 for the pregnancy.)
