During the second trimester of pregnancy fetal development starts to take on new meaning. Things start to feel more real for the expectant mother. The baby’s heartbeat will be heard during prenatal visits and maternity clothes are inevitable.

The baby now has functioning organs and can possibly even hear you when you speak. At the beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy the baby will even look like a baby if you get a chance to look at it with an ultrasound.

In the 13th week of the second trimester of pregnancy the baby will start to move around. The mother to be probably will only feel tiny butterfly like flutters at first when the baby first starts to move around. The movements will be more of flexing and stretching at this point.

It’s week 15 of the second trimester of pregnancy that the baby will start to form skin. The skeleton is developing more and the baby will be able to make a fist by the 16th week. At this point, the baby will only weigh about 3-4 ounces and will be 4 to 5 inches long. Facial expressions during this time are due to the new muscles forming in the face. Hiccups are common during this time as well.

During the 17th week of the second trimester of pregnancy, fat begins to be stored under the baby’s skin. Fat is essential for when the baby is born to keep in their body heat and provide the baby with necessary energy.

At week 18 the baby will be able to hear the noises your body makes. A stomach rumble may startle the baby and your heartbeat may be a comforting sound. This is the week the baby is able to swallow as well. By the time the 19th week in the second trimester of pregnancy arrives, the baby may be able to distinguish the difference between voices and know when you are speaking.

Week 20 marks the halfway point of your pregnancy. The baby will now be 6 inches long and weigh just a little bit more than half a pound. It will also have hair, including eyebrows.

During the next few weeks of the second trimester of pregnancy, the baby will be absorbing sugar from the amniotic fluid it has swallowed. Taste buds will form on the tongue also during this time.

The baby will be practicing their breathing techniques by moving amniotic fluid in and out of the lungs. The production of fat will really start to happen now, as the baby will start to gain more and more weight during the rest of the pregnancy.

The baby will be exploring their own body and facial features now along with anything else they can reach at this point of the second trimester of pregnancy.

At the end of the second trimester or at week 27, the baby may weigh around 2 pounds. If born now, the chance of the baby surviving is at 85% but serious complications are always a possibility if the baby is born this early.
